How to Keep Your Thyroid Healthy

Making sure your thyroid gland is functioning healthy and well is vital to your metabolic system. When the thyroid gland produces and releases thyroid hormone it regulates your metabolism. The metabolism process ensures our body is properly breaking down the food we consume for energy and bodily functions.


However, when the thyroid gland is not functioning properly this can cause an array of symptoms. Whether the thyroid gland is overactive or underactive it can place your body under distress. Luckily, there are a few things you can incorporate into your lifestyle for a healthy thyroid gland.


Tip #1. Eat Iodine Containing Foods

The thyroid gland actually uses iodine to create thyroid hormones. When your body has low iodine levels it disturbs the thyroid gland and the production of thyroid hormones. Symptoms like neck swelling, fatigue and weakness, unexpected weight gain, and irregular menstrual cycles may be a result. A few ways to combat this is by incorporating more seaweed, seafood, and eggs. Some people may be very sensitive to iodine so avoid supplements high in iodine unless it is determined by your doctor that your levels are very low.



Tip #2. Eat More Selenium Rich Foods.

Selenium is one of the key micronutrients for a healthy conversion of thyroid hormone and function. It is also a very potent antioxidant that protects the thyroid gland from oxidative stress. Here is a list of some selenium-rich foods that can be easily added to your diet…

  • Brazil Nuts

  • Lean Meats

  • Brown Rice

  • Spinach

  • Lentils

  • Cashews


Tip #3. Be Mindful of Goitrogens!

Goitrogens are naturally-occurring chemicals found in raw plant-based foods. Goitrogens affect thyroid function because it disrupts the way your body uses iodine, which is necessary for the thyroid hormone creation process. Goitrogen-rich foods include bok choy, broccoli, cabbage, and sweet potato. A way to avoid any negative impact on the thyroid gland is to lightly cook, steam, or ferment these goitrogenic foods.


Tip #4. Stay Away From Gluten!

Gluten is a protein found in wheat and grains like spelt, rye, barley, and oats. Foods like bread, pasta, and cereal all contain gluten which is a common staple in a standard Western diet. Studies suggest that autoimmune thyroid disorders, like Hashimoto’s and Graves disease, can be linked with gluten intolerance. Evidence shows that gluten’s molecular structure is very similar to thyroid tissue. So, when gluten is consumed the immune system attacks these foreign invaders, also known as gluten proteins, and the thyroid gland. The best way to avoid an imbalance in the thyroid gland is to eliminate gluten completely.
