Living with Fibroids


While most women are seen as caregivers for their families, it can be easy to set aside their own health and wellness care. It can be a lot to juggle, especially when health concerns arise like fibroids. These non-cancerous fibroids vary from person to person, ranging in symptoms, size, and quantity. No one knows what causes fibroids, but researchers have determined that hormonal levels and lifestyle factors can definitely contribute to their growth and development. Symptoms can vary from none to painful pelvic and lower back pains, prolonged and heavy menstrual cycles, and much more!


Studies have shown that almost 20-80% of women develop fibroids by the time they reach age 50. While this condition is very common, developing healthier habits is not often discussed. Restoring balance within the hormones, nourishing your body with nutrient-dense foods, vitamins, and herbs all contribute to the shrinking of fibroids and in some cases eliminate them altogether. Let’s take a look at my top lifestyle tips that can improve fibroid symptoms.


  • Anti-Inflammatory Diet

High levels of inflammation in the body are a major conduit to many health concerns and encourage the growth of fibroids. Transitioning to an anti-inflammatory diet includes foods in omega-3s, fruits, vegetables, lean organic protein, healthy fats, and spices. The main concept is to avoid or limit the consumption of processed foods, red meats, and alcohol. Here is a list of foods that you should add to your grocery list…

- Oily fish (salmon, tuna, sardines)

- Berries (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, cherries)

- Leafy greens (kale, spinach, collard greens, arugula)

- Healthy fats (olive oil, coconut oil, avocado)

- Fiber-rich foods (carrots, beets, broccoli, brussel sprouts)

  • Create an Exercise Routine

Depending on what symptoms you are experiencing with fibroids, exercise may be the last thing you are worried about. However, developing a consistent exercise routine has been proven to have a positive effect on your hormones. Research has shown that levels of estrogen and progesterone are significantly reduced, which in turn can prevent the growth of fibroids. However, women who fall under the spectrum of dealing with severe symptoms are recommended to avoid vigorous exercise. While it may be uncomfortable and challenging to do so, it is highly recommended to stay as active as possible. Light exercises like walking, stretching, or yoga is a great alternative and may slow down the growth of fibroids.



  • Maintain a Healthy Weight

Studies show that women with a body mass index (BMI) are more prone to developing fibroids. It is best to maintain a BMI between 18.5 and 25 to avoid the complication of fibroid symptoms.
